The Differences Between Senaru Crater Rim and Sembalun Crater Rim
Senaru Crater Rim:
In Indonesian or the Sasak dialect, it is called Pelawangan Senaru, which means “the entrance from Senaru” or “the gateway from Senaru to Mount Rinjani. Sitting at an altitude of 2,641 meters above sea level, Senaru Crater Rim is located on the slopes overlooking Lake Segara Anak, to the west of Mount Rinjani and Mount Setampol. From this vantage point, you get a full view of Lake Segara Anak with the majestic Mount Rinjani as its backdrop. This breathtaking scenery makes Senaru Crater Rim feel truly extraordinary, as if you have stepped into a fairy tale.
Many people believe that trekking to Pelawangan Senaru is sufficient, as the views and the overall experience there are enough to capture the essence of Mount Rinjani.
Sembalun Crater Rim:
Similar to Pelawangan Senaru, Sembalun Crater Rim (Pelawangan Sembalun) is the primary campsite before the final ascent to the summit of Mount Rinjani. Due to its proximity to the peak, it features a vast camping area that can accommodate approximately 400 tents, which serves as a basis for calculating the mountain’s climbing quota. From here, you can see about half of Lake Segara Anak, as part of it is obscured by the massive slopes of Mount Rinjani. However, its position offers a stunning front-row view of the summit, the village of Sembalun, and a spectacular sunset, with attitude 2639 m above sea level.

The paths to the Senaru and Sembalun Crater Rims are distinct; the former is accessed via the Senaru trekking route, while the latter is reached through the Sembalun route,These two routes were explained in the previous article.
