I found this story on social media about two travelers from China who made the trip on April 7, 2026. To be honest, I’m not sure which agency they used for their climb.
Day 1:
7 hours of climbing, gaining 1500 meters. The guide picks you up from the hotel at 7 AM to start the hike. After about 5 km, you reach Pos 2 for lunch. This section is the easiest part of the entire trail; if you want to save energy, you can also choose to take a motorcycle up. After lunch, the real climb begins to an altitude of 2600 meters to set up camp. The first night is quite tough. The mountain is often shrouded in thick fog or raining. The camp has no electricity or internet, and the air humidity is almost 100%, making it too damp and cold to sleep. are from the first day’s hike and the campsite.
Day 2:
The most difficult day. We set off for the summit at 2:30 AM, climbing 1100 meters. The loose gravel surface is very difficult to walk on; even with a fast, non-stop pace, it takes 3 hours P8-9. Then, we descended back to the camp for breakfast. Around 9 AM, we descended another 600 meters to Segara Anak Lake. This part of the trail is quite challenging. A point to note!! For the 3-day, 2-night itinerary, the hot springs are only available for soaking in July and August. In April, it’s still the tail end of the rainy season, the water flow is too strong, and the hot springs are closed, but you can go fishing. Our porters arrived ahead of time and caught a lot of fish, which they fried for us for dinner later, and it smelled amazing. After lunch, we continued to climb 600 meters to another ridge to camp, which took about 3 hours. This uphill section is particularly steep, with many sections at an angle of over 60 degrees, consuming a lot of energy. The campsite at night has a beautiful view, offering a panorama of Segara Anak Lake.
Day 3:
A continuous descent of 1500 meters, taking about 5.5 hours. The first two hours are on a gravelly and difficult path, followed by a forest section which is relatively easier.
Gear-wise: 2 sun hats, sunglasses, non-slip hiking boots, 2 pairs of socks, slippers (to change into at the camp), 2 sets of quick-dry long and short-sleeved shirts, 2 pairs of quick-dry pants, a fleece jacket or down jacket, and a waterproof shell jacket. The weather on the mountain can change in an instant, and it might start raining at any time. It’s impossible to dry clothes at the camp, so you must have at least one full set of spare clothes. It gets really cold at night. The sleeping bag provided by the travel agency is very thin. I wore two pairs of pants plus a down jacket on the first night and was still too cold to sleep, and even breathing felt cold (a little tip: ask your guide for a cup of hot water to put in a small plastic bottle and place it in your sleeping bag for warmth—it’s very effective). There are no facilities for showering or washing your face at the camp. After a full day of hiking, you’ll be covered in sweat. You can bring disposable towels, wet them, and use them to wipe your face and body. The fog on the trail might look thick, but the UV rays are extremely strong, so you must protect yourself from the sun. The porters are responsible for cooking for everyone during the trek. If you’re not used to Indonesian food, it’s a good idea to bring a few packages of pickled vegetables.
This short story follows the journey of two climbers in 7th April 2026. From their experience, we’ve gathered key insights and practical tips to help you prepare for your own climb.
From the details provided, I would like to emphasize a few observations. First, the thinness of the sleeping bags suggests they were standard rental items. Second, despite heavy rain during the trek, the weather cleared up by morning. Furthermore, their itinerary likely followed the Sembalun-to-Senaru route, given that they missed the hot springs. In contrast, the Sembalun-Torean route offers multiple opportunities to soak in hot springs during the hike down.
- Limited Daily Quota: Mount Rinjani has a strict limit of 240 climbers per day, and slots often sell out months in advance. However, in April 2026, the quota remained available due to a decrease in tourism caused by the global conflict.
- Risk of Illegal Climbing: If the official quota is full, you cannot climb legally. While some may claim it is still possible to go, you would be considered an illegal climber, which carries significantly higher risks.”
Tips and Advice: Mountaineering requires meticulous planning due to its inherent risks. To avoid scams or fraud, it is best to book your trip well in advance. Finally, know your own physical limits so you can develop a safe and effective climbing plan.
