First if all, the transfer worked just as advertised: We had a... read more very nice driver (Adi) who picked us up from the airport and brought us to the accommodation, from where we started the tour early next morning. It is Rinjani Heroes policy to not group people together to avoid frustration of being grouped together with slow team members. Therefore, we were a group of five, us (one couple) the guide Mul, and two porters, Alim and Pendi. On the evening before the hike, we noticed we had booked the wrong two day tour (Seranu crater instead of Sembalun summit tour), but even that late the team was so flexible that we could re-book to the other tour!
The guys picked us up and brought us to the starting point of the hike - the porters marched ahead and we hiked with Mul, who always stayed close to us (unlike some other tours we observed), was very chatty, always with a smile and some good tips for the hike ("slow and steady"!). It was a great experience to hike with Mul!
On each day there were two meals provided by the team (Lunch + dinner on day 1, breakfast and lunch on day 2) which was always something different, very tasty and a good portion to fuel the body! Bottled water was also always provided.
The hike itself is definitely very challenging, some parts are very steep (the hiking poles provided helped) and the Sembalun trail provides very little shade, so it gets hot until the sun goes down when it gets very cold. You are rewarded with a great view from the crater rim and from the top of the mountain on the sunset hike.

One tip for other travellers: When sleeping in a tent, you may be unlucky with your neighbors who can be noisy and keep their lights on - bring earplugs and an eye mask. We slept for 1.5 hours before going on a 2 AM sunrise hike...
